Apr. 11, 2008 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (or Coachella) is a three-day annual music and arts festival held at the breathtakingly beautiful and peaceful Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California. The event features many genres of music including alternative rock, hip hop, and electronica as well as large sculptural art. The festival has been described as "The Best American Festival" by Rolling Stone.

Coachella 2008 will be held from April 25 (Friday) to 27 (Sunday). Jack Johnson (see photo) will be one of the artists performing on April 25. He is a Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter, musician, filmmaker and surfer who achieved commercial success after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales in 2001. He has since released four more albums and a number of EPs.

The Coachella Music Festival has a desert setting (the city of Indio is a part of the Colorado Desert), with daytime temperatures frequently rising to over 100°F (38°C). The festival enjoys little cloud cover or shade. The temperature drops drastically after sunset.

Each year, the festival also features interesting installation art and sculptures. Most of the pieces are interactive, and provide entertainment and eye candy for attendees walking throughout the Polo grounds. Many of the works were initially created for the Burning Man festival. In contrast to the largely non-repeating roster of musical artists represented at the festival, a few of the visual artists, such as Robochrist Industries, The Mutaytor, Cyclecide, and The Do LaB, have appeared during several consecutive years at Coachella.

It was reported in 2007 that camping attendance in 2007 was in upwards of 17,000. The campground includes a karaoke lounge, general store, and shower trucks; semi trucks with around 30 showers in the trailer.

2008 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will feature a new and improved way for festival-goers to reach their destination. It is called "Coachella Express" sponsored by Amtrak. This one-of-a kind train will transport campers from Los Angeles to the Empire Polo Field and back for the Festival set for Friday, April 25, Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27. Coachella, Amtrak and the city of Indio are working together to create a temporary train platform in Indio; from there concert-goers will be transported via shuttle buses to and from the camping check-in area at the polo field and the temporary station.

"Coachella Express" is FREE of charge and is open to anyone with a camping & festival ticket. Reservations can ONLY be made at Coachella site and will be on a first-come, first-served basis effective immediately.

More than just a convenient way to travel, Amtrak is also energy efficient. Traveling by rail contributes less per passenger mile to greenhouse gas emissions than either cars or airplanes. According to U.S. Department of Energy data, Amtrak is 17 percent more efficient than domestic airline travel and 21 percent more efficient than auto travel on a per-passenger-mile basis. When combined with all modes of transportation, passenger railroads emit only 0.2 percent of the travel industry's total greenhouse gases.
