May 22, 2008 35th Telluride Bluegrass Festival

Telluride Colorado Mountains The Telluride Bluegrass Festival is held annually in Telluride, Colorado by Planet Bluegrass. Although traditionally the festival focuses on bluegrass music, it often features music from a variety of genres. In 1973, its first year, it attracted 1000 participants. Currently the festival's attendance is capped at 10,000.
Nestled in the rugged San Juan Mountains and surrounded on three sides by the natural architecture of the Telluride Box Canyon, Telluride is arguably the most spectacular town in the American West. The photo shows a view of a mountain while driving above Telluride on one of its many trails. The Town of Telluride sits in the valley.

The 35th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival will be held from June 19 to 22, 2008. The lineup includes unique collaborations (Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby with Kentucky Thunder; Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season; Darrell Scott & John Cowan), fresh sounds (Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Brett Dennen, The Frames, Tift Merritt), beloved Telluride veterans (Ani DiFranco, Yonder Mountain String Band, Sam Bush Band) and more.

With music on the main stage all day, intimate workshops on the Elks Park stage in the middle of town, prestigious band and songwriting contests, late-night Nightgrass concerts at every indoor venue in town, and jam sessions throughout the night in condos and around campgrounds, this is a week of uncommon musical riches.

Gone are the days of concert stages littered with cases of bottled water – at least at the 35th Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Planet Bluegrass has announced that bottled water will not be allowed in the backstage or on stage and it will be restricted in the audience and food vendor areas. This new policy will eliminate the waste of disposable plastic bottles, along with the energy required to manufacture and transport the single-use bottles across the country.

To accomplish this severe reduction of bottled water, the festival is installing several water stations which use local Telluride tap water run through a system of filters. All artists and their crews will receive a stainless steel reusable water bottle as a gift of the festival. The 10,000 audience members, known to each other as “festivarians,” will be encouraged to bring their own reusable bottles from home or purchase reusable bottles at the festival.

Planet Bluegrass’s green efforts have been featured on American Public Media's “Weekend America,” the Rocky Mountain News, Colorado Public Radio’s “Colorado Matters,” and as panelists at the Americana Music Conference and the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee’s Green Workshop.
