July 28, 2008 Opera Omaha’s Pirates of Penzance

Opera Australia's Pirates of Penzance Opera Omaha is an opera company in Omaha, Nebraska. Their season extends from fall until spring every year, and consists of three complete operas along with partial performances and promotions around the Omaha area. The company utilizes the Orpheum Theater for its operas. It is well-known for premiering Wakonda's Dream, a contemporary opera about Native Americans set in the Niobrara.
Opera Omaha kicks off its 51st season with the company's eighth world premiere, The Blizzard Voices (September 12 & 13, 2008). Ted Kooser's poetic retelling of the Blizzard of 1888, or "The Children's Blizzard", forms the basis of the libretto that composer Paul Moravec crafted into a gripping and poignant mixture of words and music. Shifting to comedy, the ever-popular and hilarious Pirates of Penzance (October 15, 17 & 19, 2008) proves that not all pirates are from the Caribbean. The season's final production, La Bohème (April 15, 17 & 19, 2009), tugs at the heartstrings and reminds us that we were all poor and in love once.

The Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave of Duty, is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It is one of the Savoy Operas. The opera's official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on December 31, 1879, where the show was a hit with audiences and critics. The London premiere was on April 3, 1880, at the Opera Comique, where it ran for 363 performances, having already been playing successfully for over three months in New York.

From the beginning, The Pirates of Penzance has been one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular comic operas. Its 1981 Broadway revival (Kevin Kline as the Pirate King) by Joseph Papp ran for 787 performances and gave a boost to the opera's popularity. Professional and amateur productions of the opera continue with frequency. In 2007, the New York City Opera mounted a new production as did Opera Australia (see photo).
