Virginia State Song

Virginia currently has no state song, as the former state song, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny," was retired on the grounds that the lyrics were considered offensive to African Americans in 1997.

At the ACIR's State Song Subcommittee meeting on July 7, 1999, the Subcommittee selected eight songs for further consideration in the contest based on the weighted scores the songs received from individual Subcommittee members in the third round of judging.

Listed below are the songs being considered for the new Virginia State Song.

"Virginia The Land I Love" by Judy Haile and William Soule
"Virginia" by Donna M. and Jimmy Dean
"Sweet Virginia Breeze" by Robbin Thompson and Steve Bassett
"Virginia's My Home" by Branan Thompson and David Wiley
"Virginia" by Lynn K. Rinker
"Oh, Virginia" by Robert J. Clouse
"Take Me Home to Virginia" by Gary W. Parker
"Longing For Old Virginia" by A. P. Carter

At its January 11, 2000 meeting, the ACIR accepted the State Song Subcommittee's recommendation to postpone the selection of a winner in the State Song Competition. The additional time will allow the Subcommittee to publicize the new arrangements of the eight grand finalist songs created by various college faculty members, and to receive additional comments about them from the general public.

In January 2006, a state Senate panel voted to designate "Shenandoah" as the "interim official state song". On March 1, 2006, the House Rules Committee of the General Assembly voted down bill SB682, which would have made "Shenandoah" the official state song.
